2009 Woodstock 'Pilot's View' Shiraz
www.winemuse.com.au
I recently tasted two of the reds from the ‘Companion Series’ of wines created by Woodstock in the McLaren Vale. This range has been released destined for wine lists rather than the retail shelf & therefore are made to be more food friendly. The story behind the name is that Douglas Collett, the patriarch of the current custodian of Woodstock, was a WWII pilot who was inspired by the European vineyards that he flew over to come back to Australia and plant vines & make wines.
While the OCTOgenarian Grenache Tempranillo, also in this series, is fresh silky & elegant, the Pilots View is a powerful muscly style of wine. It is rich with blackfruit, chocolate, with some coconut & cinnamon (Coconut Rough anyone?). The tannins are supple & the finish is long. I think that this wine needs just a little more time but it is certainly ripe for drinking now too.
Date: 30th August 2011 Price: $38 Value: $$ Drink: 2 – 7 yrs
