Our Wines
2012 Woodstock 'Mary McTaggart' Riesling
Background
A silhouette of the young lady herself, this wine is named in honour of the Collett family matriarch, Mary McTaggart. A lover of all things aromatic, Mary started Woodstock Estate’s flourishing herb garden. The delicately perfumed Riesling grape made her favourite wine, and this scented example comes solely from a small north-facing vineyard on the sandy slopes of the highest part of the estate. Soothed by sea and gully breezes over summer, the fruit is picked in the cool of the night, capturing the fragrant varietal aromas at their peak.
Winemaking
The 2012 growing season presented ideal conditions for ripening grapes in McLaren Vale with mild days and cool nights. The grapes were harvested early in the morning on 7th of February. Free-run juice was cool fermented to retain delicate Riesling aromatics. The combination of low yields and ideal weather ensured concentrated flavours and balanced chemistry resulting in a fine wine.
The Wine
Attractive floral perfumes invite tasting. Citrus blossom aromas continue on the palate with crisp, refreshing natural acidity and a long lingering finish. The mid-palate is dry, with a fruity mouthful of zesty citrus flavours and underlying mineral notes. Refreshingly vibrant in youth, this Riesling has also great potential for aging gracefully if cellared in cool conditions.
Serving Suggestion
Fresh fish, lightly grilled to perfection served with garden fresh salads, just as Mary would have enjoyed it.
