Our Wines

2011 Woodstock Shiraz

Background

The hero variety of the region, Woodstock Shiraz is sourced from Woodstock Estate and neighbouring vineyards in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. Being a very vigorous red variety, the key is to manage our Shiraz leaf canopies to balance the number of leaves with the number of bunches.

Winemaking

The 2011 vintage was very wet in all of South Eastern Australia. Our lower yielding vines with open leaf canopies were able to dry out between rain showers and ripen the small crops. Some vines in certain protected microclimate sites were unable to dry out and therefore excluded from our winemaking.  After fermentation on skins for a minimum of 5 days, this Shiraz was barrel aged for up to 14 months in carefully selected French and American oak barrels. 15% sees new oak barrels while the rest mature in 2 to 3 year old oak for complexity without oak domination.

The Wine

The 2011 Shiraz shows a deep vibrant cerise colour with some youthful purple hues. An aromatic display of  savoury oak, ripe red berries and dark cherries with hints of cinnamon. The palate is coated with lush bursts of mulberries and spice,  joined by soft, youthful tannins and some balanced acidity which completes the structure. These youthful characters provide great promise for 3 to 5 years to come. This unique 2011 vintage offers softer tannins than normal, but retains that characteristic rich middle palate flavor of McLaren Vale.

Serving Suggestion

Tandoori lamb cutlets with spiced baked potatoes and green beans.
